MSRT
ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2006
April 26-28, 2006
2006 OLIVER E. MERRILL LECTURER
Robert Mortensen, RT(R)(MR)(MBA)
 |
We celebrate the Oliver E. Merrill Lecturer by selecting a member from our profession that exemplifies the dedication shown by Oliver Merrill in support of the Radiologic Technologists in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This years lecturer equally includes support of all technologists and the society as an active part of his life. Without his support, our professional status would not be at the level it is today. We look forward to hearing the wisdom of Robert Mortensen, this years Oliver E. Merrill Lecturer.

The hot days of summer are behind us, apples are ready to be picked in the crisp fall air, and the MSRT Annual Conference of 2006 was almost six months ago! Time flies when you’re having fun and judging from the comment cards completed by our attendees, the majority of attendees rated the conference very good to excellent.
I would like to thank all attendees who took the time to fill out the speaker evaluation cards and the conference surveys. This feedback is critical and will allow the MSRT to better meet its membership’s needs through our half-day seminars being held throughout the state. We always seek ways to improve our annual conference since it has always been the highlight of our efforts.
The panel discussion format continues to be an effective way to fit several professional’s expertise into a one hour, interactive presentation. The Hurricane Katrina Volunteer Response presentation was informative and thought provoking, definitely one of the most memorable presentations since I became involved with the MSRT nine years ago. While the CE presentations are what draw technologists to the conference, it is the Buzz Bowl competition that attracts an even larger number of radiology students.
The Buzz Bowl competition was coordinated with the help of Marie Oliver, Shannon Cahoon, and Linda Doucette, spending most of the two and a half day conference running the competition. The Buzz Bowl is a lot of work, informative, competitive, frustrating at times, a great registry review, yet fun for all involved. The two teams from Stamford Connecticut placed first and second with the team from Massachusetts General Hospital placing third. Other teams participating in the competition were: Brigham and Women’s hospital, Massasoit, Middlesex, Northern Essex, Quinsigamond, Regis and Springfield. Congratulations to all teams that competed, their knowledge and quick answers are always impressive.
Each year at the conference, the MSRT and the Quarter Century Club award four scholarships to applicants meeting all the guidelines. Applicants must submit their college transcript, an essay, and a letter of recommendation. Cheryl Hollyfield was the recipient of the $1000 Oliver E. Merrill scholarship sponsored by the MSRT. Ralph Campbell was the recipient of the $750 scholarship sponsored by the Quarter Century Club and the Quinlan Companies. Both students attend Massachusetts Bay Community College and participated on the MGH Buzz Bowl team.
The MSRT sponsors two other competitions in addition to the Buzz Bowl, the scientific papers and scientific exhibits. The highest rated participants are as follows:
Scientific Papers:
1st “Fractures Of The Forearm In Children”
By Wendy Beauvais, Northern Essex Community College
2nd “Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis”
By Karen DeCarteret, Northern Essex Community College
3rd “PET/CT”
By Michael Lutka, Stamford Hospital School of Radiography
Scientific Exhibits:
1st “Patient Comfort in MRI Thru Use of U.R. Headsets”
By Ron Simone, Stamford Hospital School of Radiology
2nd “Forensic Radiology”
By Albert Pontillo, Stamford Hospital School of Radiolog
A very special thank you goes out to Mary Frangiosi-Creasy, who generously donated a week in the Bahamas for this year’s raffle. The MSRT raised $2581 that will help support student scholarships in the future. Raymond Francois was the winner of the raffle; hope he enjoys his week in the sun!
Keeping with the Bahamas raffle theme, we hosted a Bahamans night dance on Thursday evening. This is the second year we held a social event and both times it was a great success. We were taking pictures, so be sure to check the photo albums at next year’s conference!

While the conference is financially sound, there is always room for improvement. Taking into consideration that seven CEU’s are offered, breakfast, buffet luncheon, and an afternoon dessert break are all included in the $99 registration fee per day. The MSRT conference continues to be reasonably priced with great quality lectures.
In order for the MSRT to succeed as a society and continue providing high quality seminars, technologist attendance needs to increase. Don’t wait until the month before your credits are due, attend our Annual conference: coupled with a few of our half-day seminars, you will receive all the required CEU’s. Please help support your professional association. The MSRT needs your participation in order to ensure a strong society that will continue to serve its membership in the future.
Now is the time to start preparing for the 2007 MSRT Annual Conference. Marie Oliver and Shannon Cahoon have volunteered to be this year’s Conference Co-Chairs. They already compared several potential sites for the conference taking into consideration: meeting space, guest rooms, lobby space, food quality and cost, cleanliness and service. The 2007 MSRT Annual Conference will be hosted at the Westford Regency Hotel and Conference Center. Marie and Shannon are open to ideas, so if you know of a great lecturer, please forward the information to them through the MSRT website. We look forward to another successful conference. Please check the website for further details on the 2007 MSRT Annual Conference.
Respectfully submitted,
Debra Ricciardelli
2006 Conference Chairperson
