FAQs

The differences are so confusing. Why doesn't the MSRT change the state requirements to be the same as the ARRT?

The MSRT is not the regulatory agency requiring the specific credits. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Radiation Control Program passed legislation setting our current state requirements but does not approve any lectures. The MSRT is the designated professional body accepted by the RCP to approve lectures for the specific categories. So, it would take the state legislature to make the necessary changes.

Likewise, the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) requires CEUs, but does not approve any lectures. They have designated national societies such as the ASRT, SNM, ACR, AHRA, and SDMS as RCEEMs (Recognized Continuing Education Evaluation Mechanism). Organizations such as the AMA and ANA are not considered RCEEMs, but programs approved by these groups will be accepted by the ARRT for Cat. A if the lecture is related to the radiological sciences.

Why is there a fee for CEU approvals?

Due to increasing costs for printing, mailing, handling, etc., the MSRT Executive Board voted to charge all MSRT members a processing fee per request for approval. Modality assignments continue to be done at no charge.

Institutions may purchase Pre-Paid Coupons from the MSRT office (Pre-Paid Coupon Order Form). One ticket coupon should be submitted with each approval form. Please pay by check or money order made payable to the MSRT. Do not send cash.

When do I need to submit a form for a modality assignment?

Any time you attend a lecture or seminar that has been approved by an agency other than the MSRT, such as the ASRT, AMA, SDMS, MNA, you should submit a completed Modality Assignment Form along with your certificate of attendance and lecture description to the MSRT office. Conferences held out of Massachusetts and approved only by the ASRT for Category A credit will not have a state category and may require a modality assignment as well. Remember: A modality assignment by the MSRT is NOT an approval by the MSRT.

This needs to be done since other organizations, including the ASRT and ARRT, are not aware of the category requirements as set by the Radiation Control Program. The RCP has also requested that if you are awarded multiple credits for a one-day seminar that you send the lecture description, if audited, with the certificate of attendance if you have not submitted a modality assignment.

FAQS About CEUs - I'm still confused as to what I need for State Licensure vs. ARRT requirements.

What do I need to do to get CEUs for BLS/CPR Certification?

Please be advised that as of January 1, 2007 the ARRT no longer accepts CPR Certification for credit.

Why doesn't the MSRT automatically categorize any lectures approved by the ASRT?

Unless the organization sponsoring the lecture submits the necessary paperwork to the MSRT, we have no way of knowing that the lecture needs a modality assignment. So, the individual technologist must be responsible to make sure they have the necessary categories and credits.

To get credit for college courses, submit an Achievements in Continuing Education Individual Request for CPR and College Courses for Approval with a copy of the course description or syllabus, transcript with a "C" or better to the MSRT.

Copy of a college transcript with a "C" or better counts as 12 Cat. A credits for each academic quarter credit or 16 credits for each academic semester credit.

To get 3 credits for CPR, you must submit Achievements in Continuing Education Individual Request for CPR and College Courses for Approval, unless the CPR Course/Instructor was approved for credit. Otherwise, CPR counts as 1 credit.

RCP does not accept passing a Initial Registry Exam for CEUs.
