POLITICALLY CORRECT PATIENT CARE
Brian McIntosh, A.S. RT (R)
As a Radiologic Technologist, it is inherent in my professional nature to provide the best patient care possible for any of my patients. However, if we think ?out of the box? for a second, and look at the grander scope of patient care, there is another way in which the standards of patient care can be improved, whether it is in an imaging department located in Worcester, Massachusetts or Tacoma, Washington.
How is this possible? By getting involved in the grass roots campaign that supports the Consumer Assurance of Radiologic Excellence (C.A.R.E.) bill. The C.A.R.E. bill is a piece of legislation introduced into both the U.S. Congress and U.S. Senate that would establish federal minimum standards for the education and certification of radiologic technologists and radiation therapists. Sadly, no such legislation currently exists!
The ASRT web-site www.asrt.org has a great link that educates people on the C.A.R.E. bill. Log on to the main site and then click on the government relations link on the left side of the screen. There you will find a brief history of the C.A.R.E. bill, e-mail links to congressional leaders, and also form letters that advocate your support of the C.A.R.E. bill. It literally takes only 5 minutes to send a letter to Senator John Kerry and Senator Ted Kennedy.
I have also included a sample letter for your convenience. I encourage you to become politically correct in your representation of patient care!
